Meta acquires Moltbook
Meta has acquired Moltbook, a Reddit-like "social network" where AI agents can interact using OpenClaw technology. The acquisition was first reported by Axios and later confirmed by TechCrunch.
A Meta spokesperson stated that Moltbook will be integrated into Meta Superintelligence Labs, and its creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join the Meta team as part of the acquisition. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The spokesperson mentioned that the addition of the Moltbook team to Meta Superintelligence Labs will enhance the capabilities of AI agents to serve individuals and businesses. The unique approach of connecting agents through a persistent directory offers new opportunities in the rapidly evolving AI space, and Meta looks forward to collaborating with the Moltbook team to deliver innovative and secure AI experiences to users.
OpenClaw, developed by Peter Steinberger, has gained popularity as a tool that enables natural language communication with AI models like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok through popular messaging platforms such as iMessage, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp.
While OpenClaw gained traction within the tech community, Moltbook attracted a wider audience, sparking interest among individuals unfamiliar with OpenClaw. However, concerns arose about the security of Moltbook when it was discovered that human users could easily impersonate AI agents and post potentially alarming content.
Ian Ahl, CTO at Permiso Security, revealed that Moltbook's Supabase credentials were left unsecured for a period, allowing unauthorized access to tokens and posing as AI agents on the platform.
The future integration of Moltbook into Meta's AI initiatives remains uncertain, although Meta executives had expressed interest in the project during its viral phase.
