OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, a specialized, sandboxed environment within ChatGPT designed to handle medical and wellness inquiries with increased privacy.
Core Features and Integrations
Isolated Workspace: The feature operates as a dedicated space with its own memory and history, separate from standard ChatGPT interactions to prevent sensitive data from bleeding into non-health chats.
- Medical Record Integration: Through a partnership with b.well, users can securely connect their electronic medical records from over 2.2 million U.S. providers. This allows ChatGPT to analyze visit summaries, lab results, and clinical histories.
- Wellness App Connectivity: Users can link third-party apps like Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Peloton, Weight Watchers, and Function to receive personalized feedback on sleep, activity, and nutrition.
- Functionality: It is designed to help users prepare for doctor appointments, understand test results, and evaluate insurance options based on their personal health data.
Safety and Privacy
- Not for Diagnosis: OpenAI emphasizes that the tool is intended for information and support, not for medical diagnosis or treatment.
- Privacy Protections: Conversations in the Health tab are encrypted (though not end-to-end) and are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models by default.
- Clinical Grounding: The product was shaped by feedback from over 260 physicians across 30 specialties over two years to improve the accuracy of medical responses.
- Mental Health: While the initial blog post focused on physical wellness, CEO of Applications Fidji Simo confirmed the tool can handle mental health topics but is programmed to redirect users in distress to professional resources.
Availability
- Rollout: Initially available via a waitlist for a beta group, the feature is rolling out gradually to all users regardless of their subscription tier.
- Geographic Restrictions: Access to medical record connections is currently limited to the U.S., and the feature is not yet available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the UK.
