Apple renames their Operating Systems

Apple is significantly altering its operating system nomenclature, moving away from sequential version numbering to a system based on the year of release, starting next year. This means the upcoming iPhones will feature iOS 26, while Macs will receive macOS Tahoe 26. Other platforms, including iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS, will also adopt the '26' designation.

Going forward, all Apple operating systems will increment their year numbers concurrently, simplifying the process of identifying whether a device is running the most recent software. This change streamlines Apple's previous, more disparate numbering scheme (e.g., iOS 18 alongside watchOS 11 and visionOS 2). The announcement was made during the keynote address at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), confirming earlier reports from Bloomberg in late May.
